我永远都忘不了1975年的那一个夏天。妈妈36岁那年的一天她突然病逝了。那天下午，一位警官来我家，征求我父亲的同意，因为医院想要取得我母亲的器官。我非常震惊，哭着跑进屋了。那个时候，我14岁，并不懂得为什么别人能从我失去的人身上拿走那么多。但我的父亲告诉他可以。

 “为什么你要同意呢？”我对爸爸说。

“琳达，”他搂着我，很平静地说，“我们能给予最好的礼物，是自己的一部分。你妈妈和我很早之前就决定了，如果我们能在死后让别人的生活过得更好，那我们的生命将能得到延续。”这句话让我回想了很久。
