三、想向各位求教一名叫做Melvin Howards的美国作家的相关信息

Howards Melvin, American essayist,美国散文家,麦尔文.H.,资料不多。

一、麦尔文.H.的优美散文名句

Fame turns all the lights on and while it gives power and prestige, it takes the you out of you; you must be what the public thinks you are .not what you really are or could be.——Howards Melvin, American essayist

Fame

Fame is very much like an animal chasing its own tail who, when he captures it, does not know what else to do but to continue chasing it. Fame and the delighting popularity that accompanies it, force the famous person to participate in his or her own destruction.

Those who gain fame most often gain it as a result of possessing a single talent or skill: singing, dancing, painting, or writing, etc. The successful performer develops a style that is marketed aggressively and gains some popularity. And it is this popularity that usually convinces the performer to continue performing in the same style, since that is what the public seems to want and to enjoy. But in time, the performer becomes bored singing the same songs in the same way year after year, or the painter becomes bored painting similar scenes or portraits, or the actor is tired of playing the same character repeatedly. The demand of the public holds the artist hostage to his or her own success, fame. If the artist attempts to change his or her style of writing or dancing or singing, etc.the audience may turn away and look to confer changeable fame which is passing quickly on another.

I believe that fame and celebrity, influence and power, success and failure, reality and illusion are all somehow neatly woven into a seamless fabric we laughingly call reality. I say to those who desperately seek fame and fortune, celebrity:good luck. But what will you do when you have caught your tail, your success, and your fame? Keep chasing it? If you do catch it, hang on for dear life because falling is not as painful as landing. See you soon famous and almost famous.

FAME by Melvin Howards

Fame is very like an animal chasing its own tail. There is nothing more to do after it captures its tail and holds on to it. Fame and the accompanying thrilling acclaims force the man with fame onto the road of his own destruction. Ridiculous(ironic),isn’t it?

Most of the people who have already got the fame are possessed of a speciality or a talent: singing, dancing, painting or writing, etc. that’s how they won their name. The successful entertainer acquires his fame by showing a style which dominates the market. It is this fame that makes the entertainer convinced of carrying on this style, for it seems that’s what the public want and like(favor). However, as the time goes on and on, the singer sings the same old song repeatedly year after year, the painer paints the same old scenery, the actor acts the same old role, any one can get bored. In order to maintain his success and reputation, the artist is kept as a hostage. If the artist ever tries to change his style of writing or dancing or singing, the audience will leave him(turn away) behind and present the unstable(fleeting, changeable, fickle) fame to someone else, then to another person,so on and on

Fame brings the celebrity the admiration and respect from his or her admirers in each field of endeavor, (and it is heady stuff)which the celebrity can easily get intoxicated. A performer can so undoubtfully believe (he is as good as the press)what is being told in the newspaper or magazines. But most people, most artists don't get fame and fortune. So what it matters if someone fails? Or what it matters if anyone else fails? Strangely enough, failture often can(serves as a reward to ) make up for most of the people! Someone shows sympathy to you because they feel blessed they didn’t fail like you . And your relatives might lower their expectations of you so that you don't have to compete with those who are successful and outsmart you. They would find excuses to tell you why you didn't make it and become famous: you are too sensitive, you are not interested in money, you are not interested in the power brought by fame, and you are interested in the fame that takes away the privacy, etc. These are nothing more than excuses, comforting those who fail or pretend they don't care the losses and gains.

So, why does anyone chase fame? Do you chase yours? Do you wish everyone to know you are appreciating yourself? Do you want the money accompanying the fame? You want the media to pay attention to each move of you in private and public? You want them to chase you like a hound asking questions and trying to sabotage (undermine, undo) you secretly? It’s very obvious in American politics that if you want the limelight, you have to be the target of each one who shares a different view as well as of media. Fame ,one the one hand, turns all the lights on,on the other hand, it gives you power and prestige when get “you” out of you: you must be what the public want you to be (not what you really are or could be)rather than the real you or the achievable you.Like a performer, politicians have to please his audience, which means saying the things he doesn’t (mean)completely believe or agree. So it is no wonder that so few people trust the politicans. But I still haven’t answered the question posed at the beginning: why does everyone chase fame? Some of the reasons flash upon(come to) our minds: in order to display the remarkable achievements in some field; to win the admiration from many people; to be someone disscussed about by everyone; to show before your relatives that you are beyond what they expect you to be. Maybe you (list)have some other reasons, but I think the above points are no doubt (reasonably)universal

I believe fame and praise, power and influence, failure and success, reality and fantasy are somehow neatly woven into a seamless glabrous fabric we laughingly call reality. To those who chase the fame, fortune and praise like hell, good luck to you. But what are you going to do when you have caught your tail, your success and fame? Keep on chasing it? If you truly catch hold of it, don't loose your hands even if you must die, because (falling is not as painful as landing)it’s better to be falling than falling flat on the ground. For the passers-by of this boundless and unreasonable planet, I wish you to be famous or almost famous
