In honor of Mother’s Day- Voice News- May 4, 2011

I am lucky enough to be surrounded by people who inspire me. Those who make me yearn to be a better mother, a better wife, a better human being. People who put others first and make sacrifices that I hope one day, I will be selfless enough to make myself. I am reminded daily how precious life is, and forced to face the mistakes that I have made along the way.
I am far from perfect, and my children still adore me through my many faults. My only hope is that they can learn from my mistakes while growing into productive members of society who realize that you only fail when you stop trying. They will grow, and grow, and while there will be many happy days; there will be days when we do not see eye to eye. There will be days when we go to sleep angry, and days when we do not understand one another. Hopefully, those days will be few and far between, but they will come. I will need to equip my children with the skills necessary to deal with turmoil, and to know that even though we do not agree, we still love each other and can work through it.
They will need not only study skills, but skills that will help them to put bullies in their place. They will learn not only the square root of pi, but how to change a tire. They will need to feel the importance of family, while not being afraid to spread their wings. Perhaps they will learn a foreign language, and be fortunate enough to immerse themselves in a different culture long enough to retain it. Maybe they will follow in our career paths, or maybe they will take alternative routes to pay the bills.
Whatever route they choose, I hope they find peace. Not just happiness, but peace. Peace allowing them to have no regrets, to try their best, and to live life to the fullest each, and every day. To be inspired by others while inspiring others themselves. To continue to make me proud, and to be proud of themselves, their decisions, and their actions, even when no one else is watching. I hope that they will only allow others to influence them in a positive light, and to understand that they always have choices in life. Choices that can enable them to react positively even in the most desperate of situations, all while accepting the consequences of their decisions. Choices that will continue to make me proud, and will continue to inspire me to be a better person.
I truly thought parenthood would be all about us teaching our children how to brush their teeth, ride a bike, how to read…. What I did not realize was just how much I would be learning from them. I never could have imagined how much they would change my life and inspire me to be a better person. Life through the rose colored glasses of an innocent child, who loves unconditionally, is inspiring. Inspiring indeed.
